PROJECT: Outdoor Retreat
LOCATION:
Santa Barbara, CA
DESIGNER: Joshua Weir, J Weir Masterworks, Inc.

SUMMARY: When a previous client came to J Weir Masterworks with the task of turning the front and backyards of a 1960’s ranch house into an extension of the home with privacy in mind, we knew this opportunity was one we couldn’t pass up. Building upon a history of successful projects and an already fun working partnership, each element was designed with great intentionality and attention to detail—including a surprise inscription on the fireplace: “Pax Vobiscum” meaning “peace be with you.” From built-in seating and a stunning floating fireplace, to a hand-built and designed copper roof trellis and art panels shipped from Spain, this outdoor space became a retreat of relaxation, quiet and soulful rest. One where mornings could begin with a book and coffee in hand around the warmth of the fire, and end with dinner and drinks with friends. Looking to capture sustainability, a metal standing seam roof with solar system was installed to finish off the home. This was a design-build project where the site was scraped to dirt and every angle and sun position carefully considered, and we could not be more proud of the way it turned out.
